A second day of robust bank earnings helped fuel a broader rally in stocks, offsetting another day of sharp declines in highflying chip, memory and other hardware stocks. Many of the “Magnificent Seven” stocks fueling the artificial-intelligence buildout gained.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up by about 150 points, or 0.3%, near 52,658, based on preliminary data.

The S&P 500 rose 0.4%.

The Nasdaq composite finished 0.6% higher.

The S&P 500’s financial sector closed at a new record.
