Can WTI Crude Oil Break Above the $85.00 Resistance?
On the four-hour chart, crude oil is trading at a critical technical juncture after staging a strong rebound from the $80.00 support area. The recovery has carried prices into the $84.20–$84.80 zone, where they are now testing a key resistance region that coincides with a descending trendline drawn from the recent swing high. This confluence makes the area a pivotal technical barrier. The chart suggests that the market is attempting to validate a breakout, while the long-term moving average remains below current prices, reinforcing a constructive medium-term outlook as long as WTI holds above its major support levels.
Conversely, the current price action appears to represent a retest of the descending trendline following the completion of a corrective pattern, leaving the market at a technical crossroads. If WTI manages to secure a sustained close above the $85.00 level with stronger bullish momentum, the rally could extend toward $89.20, followed by $93.00, which marks the next major upside target on the chart. On the downside, failure to break through the current resistance zone could encourage profit-taking and trigger a pullback toward the key support area between $81.00 and $80.00 before the market establishes its next directional move.
Momentum indicators continue to support this two-way scenario, with the momentum oscillator hovering near overbought territory, suggesting that buying pressure is beginning to ease and that a short-term correction remains possible before the broader uptrend resumes. In my view, however, the bullish outlook remains intact as long as prices hold above $80.99. A confirmed breakout above $84.84 would signal that WTI has emerged from its corrective phase and could pave the way for a fresh advance toward higher highs in the coming sessions.
Resistance: $84.84 – $89.24 – $93.00
Support: $80.99 – $77.62 – $73.63
